At a news conference outside One Police Plaza, the NYPD Hispanic Society and two other groups urged mayoral candidates Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota to name Pineiro to the job if they are elected, 1010 WINS reported.
The groups said Pineiro has 40 years of experience and the proper academic background for the job, according to a DNAInfo report.
If appointed, Pineiro would be the first Latino NYPD commissioner, the officers said in the publication’s report. The officers noted that Latinos make up more than 25 percent of the NYPD staff – including both officers and civilian employees, the publication reported.
De Blasio has said he would replace Kelly, blaming him for the “overuse” of stop-and-frisk, the publication reported. Lhota has said he would keep Kelly if the current commissioner wanted to stay on, but if not, Pineiro would be on his short list, the publication reported.
